The present invention provides a method for removing heavy metal ions from acid mine drainage wastewater. The method consist of contacting a solution containing heavy metals with an ion exchange resins. The present invention is also relates to an apparatus and system for the use with the method of the present investigation. Heavy metal ions are recovered from acid mine drainage wastewater by flowing the wastewater through a bed of resin for the removal of metals and thereafter through a second bed for the recovery of the heavy metals and for lowering of acidity of the wastewater. The method is accomplished by using two packed bed reactor; one packed bed reactor for metal removal and other for the recovery of the heavy metals. The reactors having valves to control the direction of flow. After a large number of flow of wastewater containing heavy metal, the metals are recovered and the resin bed is regenerated in the process to again adsorb heavy metal ions from acid mine drainage wastewater.
