The present invention refers to the synthesis of novel ionic liquids (LIs) of general formula C+ A-, halide free, which are immiscible in aqueous solutions and which have the property to remove cations from heavy metals or metalloids contained into polluted water, where said LIs have an ammonium, phosphonium or sulphonium cation, while the anion A- is represented by different carbonic acids, sulphonic acids, dicarboxylic acids and carboxylic acids with different substituents.
