A process for controlling the operation of a batchwise centrifuge has the steps of a) providing the centrifuge (1) with the centrifuge drum (2) filled with the contents (9); b) operating the centrifuge drum (2) in spinning operation; c) determining the absorbance of the contents (9) by finding an extinction coefficient which represents the absorbance; d) providing the extinction coefficient in real time; e) finding a measure for the instantaneous drying progress of the contents (9) as a function of the extinction coefficient; f) starting the washing of the contents (9) at such a time, on the basis of the measure for the instantaneous drying progress of the contents (9) with the aid of the extinction coefficient, that the amount of washing liquid required for washing is at a minimum.
