An integrally cast with the cylinder head engine block of a diesel engine with several cylinders in series arrangement, has an outer wall (21) and each having a cylinder wall (13) having therebetween a first cooling chamber (22) for a liquid coolant and a second cooling chamber (25) through a cylinder bottom (14), the cylinder bottom (14) openings (15,16) for gas exchange valves, and wherein the first cooling chamber (22) encloses all the cylinder walls (13) all around. To reinforce the vulnerable zone at the transition from the cylinder wall (13) to the cylinder base (14) and good cooling, according to the invention forms the cooling space between the cylinder walls (13) of adjacent cylinders of the first cooling chamber (22) a gap (23) whose width (35) from top to bottom is constant or increases, and reaches the cylinder walls (13) surrounding the first cooling chamber (22) all around beyond the cylinder bases (14).
