The invention relates to a pile driver (10) having: - a pile driver weight (14); - a cable (16) on which the pile driver weight is arranged; - a winch (12) which comprises a drum (13) for the cable, a motor (17) for the drum, and a clutch (19) between the drum and motor; characterized in that - the clutch comprises an eddy current clutch (19). The invention also relates to a control system (27) for the pile driver (10), wherein, in order to carry out a pile driver stroke upon the triggering of a free fall of the pile driver weight (14), the cable (16) is unwound from the drum with a predefinable cable length which is equal to the sum of the advancement of a previous pile driver stroke and the lifting height of the pile driver weight.
