A method for formulating an NIR model, comprising: a) subjecting a plurality of biomass raw material samples of the same type to near-infrared spectroscopy to produce NIR spectroscopic data of each of said samples; b) measure the chemical compositions of each of said raw material samples using wet phase chemistry techniques; c) measure the accessible carbohydrates defined as the total amount of solubilized mono and oligosaccharides for each of said raw material samples after processing under a defined pretreatment / enzymatic loading condition; and d) generating said NIR model from said spectroscopic data, from said chemical compositions, and from said amounts of solubilized mono and oligosaccharides, wherein said NIR model has the ability to anticipate the amount of accessible or recalcitrant carbohydrate produced from a sample of test raw material after processing under said defined pretreatment / enzymatic loading condition using spectral data from said sample of test raw material.
