A device (20) has an electrically-operated brake (37) and a manually-operatedauxiliarybrake (27) . The electrically-operated brake includes a coil (70), a core(68), an armature (69),and an alternating series of friction pads (74) and brake disks (75), that arearranged to becompressed between the housing and the armature. The shaft brake (27) includesa collar (22)mounted on the housing, a first interlock portion (110) mounted on the shaft,an annular member(84) surrounding the shaft and having a second interlock portion (85) and aspring (124) urgingthe member to move toward the shaft. The collar is adapted to be selectivelymoved relative tothe housing between a first portion at which the first and second interlockportions are physicallyengaged with one another (Fig. 14), and a second position at which the firstand second interlockportions are physically separated from one another (Fig. 13). The shaft mayinclude a first andsecond shaft portions (25, 26), and a cam mechanism that automaticallyreleases the brakingmechanism when the shaft portions are rotated relative to one another, andthat automaticallyre-engages the braking mechanism when the two shaft portions are moved back totheir initial nullposition.
