A method of obtaining a spatially resolved measurement for the detection ofmelanin influorophore mixtures of a solid sample includes emitting at least one pulse oflight from a laserlight source onto the solid sample at an excitation wavelength between 300 nmand 1000 nm soas to provide fluorescence excitation of the melanin by photon absorption Thepulse of light hasa photon flux density between 10 26 to 10 28 photons per cm2 per second and apulse lengthbetween 0.5 ns and 5 ns. An emitted spectral fluorescence response of themelanin is providedby evaluating a number of photons emitted at fluorescence wavelengths between400 nm and 700nm as to identify the melanin.
