Aspects of the present invention are directed at a method of operating acomputersystem to process LiDAR data to identify the species of an item of vegetation.The methodincludes identifying with the computer system LiDAR data that are associatedwith an item ofvegetation, and determining with the computer system, an average intensity ofthe LiDARdata associated with the item of vegetation. The method also includesselecting with thecomputer system, a hardwood or conifer species attribute template based on thedeterminedaverage intensity of the LiDAR data associated with the item of vegetation.The speciesattribute templates store data collected from different species. The methodalso includesanalysing with the computer system, the LiDAR data associated with the item ofvegetationand the data in the selected species attribute template to identify a speciesthat most closelymatches the item of vegetation
