Described herein is an antennafor use with a radio frequency identificationsystem, the antenna including a referenceground; an antenna feed; a primary patch antennaelement for mid-field transmission andreception of one of HP and UHF signals,wherein the primary patch antenna element iselectrically coupled to the antenna feed; andone or more additional patch antenna elementsfor mid-field transmission and receptionof the one of HF and UHF broadbandsignals, wherein each of the one or more additionalpatch antenna elements is electricallyconnected to an edge of the primary patch antennaelement for transmission and receptionof the one of HF and UHF signals. The oneor more additional patch antenna elementsprovide for gain enhancement of the one ofHF and UHF signals.
