MODIFIED ALUMINIUM HYDROXIDE FORMULATION (ATH) WITH A BOEHMITE STRUCTURE USED AS A PIGMENT FOR MATTE PAPER COATING

The present invention relates to the development of an aluminium hydroxide (ATH) with a Boehmite structure, and to a formulation comprising an aluminium hydroxide (ATH) with a Boehmite structure. Although a small mass of aluminium hydroxide is added to the paper substrate, it is extremely effective to produce a paper with matte properties, ideal for inkjet printing with a very high contrast brightness value. This formulation is used to prepare paper coating baths which, besides the modified pigment, contain a single chemical additive, starch, which works at the same time as a rheology modifier and as a binder. The coating bath is applied with a blade and the calendering process is controlled to produce a matte surface, together with a coating structure with two levels of effectiveness, an optical effectiveness (light scattering) and a printing quality effectiveness (control of ink penetration). The present invention is useful in the paper industry.
