The invention provides compositions and methods for determining the likelihood of successful treatment with various treatment regimens available to gastrointestinal cancer patients, wherein the determining of the likelihood comprises determining the genotype of the patient for the LMTK3 rs9989661 (r9) allele and the patient is Japanese. After determining if a patient is likely to be successfully treated, the invention also provides methods for treating these patients.
