The invention relates to a light guide device (10) for an ionization apparatus (32), comprising a light conducting unit (12) that has a wall (20) which extends along a longitudinal direction (14) from a light incidence section (16) of the light conducting unit (12) to a light emergence section (18) of the light conducting unit (12). A light-conducting cavity (22), inside which an internal atmosphere can be set, is formed within the wall (20). The light guide device (10) can be arranged on a through-hole (34) in an ionization chamber wall (36) in such a way that at least a portion of the light conducting unit (12) protrudes into the ionization chamber and in an operating position, the light emergence section (18) of the light conducting unit (12) can be adjusted to a pressure reduction unit (38) of the ionization chamber. The invention further relates to a method for ionizing atoms and/or molecules.
