A magnetic recording medium equipped with a magnetic recording layer, said magnetic recording layer comprising ferromagnetic parts and paramagnetic parts that are aligned in accordance with a definite rule, wherein: the ferromagnetic parts contain a ferromagnetic alloy having a saturation magnetization of 0.37-1.38 [Wb/m2] inclusive; said paramagnetic parts contain a paramagnetic alloy having a saturation magnetization of 0-0.88 [Wb/m2] inclusive; the alloy contained in the ferromagnetic parts and the alloy contained in the paramagnetic parts have almost the same composition, said composition being represented by formula (1) or formula (2); and the alloy contained in the ferromagnetic parts has an L10 ordered structure, while the alloy contained in the paramagnetic parts has an A1 disordered structure. Thus, a magnetic recording medium that can be easily manufactured and has an increased recording density can be provided. (Fe1-xM1x)Pt (1) wherein M1 stands for Mn or Nb. Fe(Pt1-yM2y) (2) wherein M2 stands for Ru, Rh, Os or Ir.
