In the first form, the safety management system is reactive, detecting fugitive refrigerant and systematically preventing further egress. The novelty relates to the incorporation of a dedicated liquid refrigerant reservoir enabling a failsafe condition. In the second form, safety management is prophylactic, removing oxygen from a closed refrigerated space thereby mitigating the possibility of an oxidising atmosphere. The novelty relates to the application of purging a refrigerated space of air to preclude the possibility of formation of a flammable atmosphere. Both forms apply an adaptive outcomes approach and may be fitted to a variety of direct expansion refrigeration systems.
