They prevent debris such as ballast, coal, rock and dirt entering the bearing. They also help to keep the grease in the bearing moist and free from dust and dirt. The rubber flaps on both sides of the covers allow easy inspection of the bearing and regrease without the need to dismantle the entire cover.
