PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make generable an easy-to-understand abstract from a long document by extracting one or more sentences which directly present topic contents concentrically from a detected introduction part and generating the abstract by putting the topic sentences together for every topic. ;SOLUTION: A constitution recognizing means 1 recognizes the hierarchical constitution of topics in a given document. A topic sentence extracting means 2 detects the introduction parts of the respective topics and extract one or more sentences which directly present topic contents as the topic sentences concentrically from a detected introduction parts. An abstract forming means 3 generates an abstract by putting the extracted topic sentences together for every topic. Namely, an abstract forming means 3 outputs the sentences extracted by the topic sentence extracting means 2 (together) to the abstract discriminatingly for every topic of proper grading. For example, when the topic sentence extracting means 2 extracts the sentences regarding two topics, the extracted sentences are grouped in two according to about which topic they have been extracted and those groups are sectioned with a blank line or the like and outputted to the abstract.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
