The invention relates to a method for the quantitative determination of the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes on photocatalytically active surfaces by means of fluorescence analysis. The photocatalysts for investigation and photocatalytically inactive reference substrates are coated with organic dyes. The samples are then exposed to UV or visible light of known intensity and spectral distribution and the intensity of fluorescence measured by means of a fluorescence scanner, chip-reader or fluorescence microscope before and after exposure and, depending on the device configuration, during exposure as well. The subsequent reduction on fluorescence of the dye-coated photocatalysts by comparison to the also coated but photocatalytically inactive reference (for example quartz glass) is used as a measure for the photocatalytic activity of the sample under investigation.
