The invention relates to a method for filling an individual electrochemical cell (1) with an electrochemically active substance and sealing the individual electrochemical cell (1), the cell housing of which is formed by two electrically conductive, substantially parallel opposing housing side walls (2, 3) and at least one electrically insulating insulation element (7, 8) provided therebetween, and in the cell housing of which an electrode foil arrangement (9) is provided. According to the invention, shell flanges (6) of the housing side walls (2, 3) are placed against each other in a congruent manner, with the at least one insulation element (7, 8) placed therebetween, to form a cell housing inner chamber (13), and the shell flanges (6) and the insulation element (7, 8) are frictionally, interlockingly and/or materially bonded in sections so that at least one filling opening (5) is left and a sealing seam (11) is formed. The electrochemically active substance is then filled into the cell housing inner chamber (13) through said filling opening (5) and the filling opening (5) is subsequently frictionally, interlockingly and/or materially sealed to form a media-tight cell housing inner chamber (13).
