Disclosed are compositions and methods for preventing or reducing postoperative ileus and gastric stasis. Such compositions include a combination of a carrier component and a bioactive component which acts to prevent or reduce post-poperative ileus. Such methods include administering a theraputically effective amount of the composition directly to the serosal surfaces of the gastrointestinal and other visceral organs.
