The present disclosure generally relates to the field of tissue engineering. The collagenous tissue produced using methods of the present disclosure has a dense matrix and high mechanical properties. Specifically, the present disclosure involves the use of a digitalis glycoside to increase the collagen content and tensile properties of connective tissue, such as cartilage.
