The present invention provides a method, a system, a client, and a server for establishing an instant messaging discussion group. The method comprises: a first client sending, to a server, a request for establishing an instant messaging discussion group, and receiving an establishment identity allocated by the server; the first client broadcasting the establishment identity, so that other clients than the first client in an instant communication application system initiate authentication to the server according to the establishment identity; the first client receiving a list, of clients passing the authentication, that is delivered by the server, and selecting at least one client from the client list to establish the instant messaging discussion group. The present invention can perfect a process of establishing the existing instant messaging discussion group and improve the establishment efficiency, so that the user can more conveniently use the instant messaging application.
