An overvoltage protection method for a backlight drive circuit in a 2D/3D mode and a backlight drive circuit applying the method. The method comprises the following steps: providing a liquid crystal display, the liquid crystal display having a 2D mode and a 3D mode and having a backlight drive circuit (100); when the liquid crystal display works in the 2D mode, the backlight drive circuit adopting a first overvoltage protection voltage value as an overvoltage protection voltage value (200); and when the liquid crystal display works in the 3D mode, the backlight drive circuit adopting a second overvoltage protection voltage value as the overvoltage protection voltage value, the second overvoltage protection voltage value being greater than the first overvoltage protection voltage value (300).
