A magnetic sensor and a method for quantifying a magnetic hysteresis loop feature of a magnetic code. The magnetic sensor is provided with a magnet (5) and a magnetically sensitive element (4). The magnetically sensitive element (4) responds to a magnetic field of a magnetic code generated when the magnet (5) magnetizes the magnetic code in paper currency. The magnetic code is magnetized by the magnet (5) when passing through a surface of the magnetic sensor, so that a magnetic hysteresis loop process is completed, and a signal of the corresponding magnetization process is read and then authenticated by the magnetic sensor. The authentication comprises authentication of the magnetic properties of softness and hardness of the magnetic code, and the authentication of the coercive force, the square degree and the reverse magnetic field distribution of the magnetic code defined by means of quantification. The magnetic sensor can distinguish attributes of a magnetic code and can define the magnetic hysteresis loop feature of the magnetic code by means of quantification, without depending on the intensity of a magnetic code signal, thereby being insensitive to a detection gap, and having the characteristics of high precision authentication and good stability of authentication.
