A distributed computer network in a system for international shipment of goods comprises a merchant product database (12) for storing item information relating to a plurality of items on sale from a merchant, the item information comprising a plain text description of the item, a classification database (22) for storing criteria and customs classifications, each of the customs classifications being assigned to at least one of the criteria, a classification service (21) receiving item information from the merchant product database (12) and having access to the classification database (22), for automatically assigning at least one of the customs classifications to the item information and a customs agent terminal (31) receiving the at least one customs classification assigned by the classification service (21). The customs agent being presented with the automatically assigned classification(s) facilitates the customs agent's job. Furthermore, the customs agent will be able to correct errors due to the automatic classification, thereby improving the correctness of the classification.
