The method involves determining a theoretical fundamental frequency corresponding to defect of a bearing element (10), where defect of the element determines frequency dispersion to define a range around the theoretical fundamental frequency. Defect-presence frequency of the element together with an associated reliability level is determined. An alert message indicating the defect in the bearing element is delivered as a function of the values of defect-presence frequency and of associated reliability level.
