The wound dressing is fixed with an ointment base, which is heated above a dropping point. An open-cell foam (3) i.e. polyurethane foam, is provided into the heated ointment base such that the foam is soaked with the ointment base. The foam is optionally temporarily compressed preferably to about 50% and up to a maximum of 90% of original volume to ensure that an internal surface of the foam is fully soaked with the ointment base. The surplus ointment base is optionally removed preferably by squeezing the foam such that the wound dressing is obtained.
