Provided are a data recording/playback device and a data recording/playback method, for providing a method for readily reading medium discrimination and management data, in a data recording/playback device that records and plays back digital information by using holography. The data recording/playback device has two-dimensional data as the minimum recording unit therefor, multiplex-records data to a medium volumetrically, records and replays same, and comprises: a page data generation unit that generates page data such that the two-dimensional data minimum recording unit used when data recording indicates one bit's worth of information; and a page data processing unit that finds a data diffraction light amount recorded by a diffraction light amount detection unit, used when replaying data, converts same to binary data on the basis of a threshold level by using a data restoration unit, and determines medium information by using a medium determination unit.
