At least one shelf (5, 7, 51, 53, 57, 59) is provided for plant roots protruding from the growing medium to extend over. Supporting means (1, 3, 45, 47, 61 ), such as two interlocking sheets, is provided for supporting the receiving means (13, 29, 49, 63) and the at least one shelf (5, 7, 51, 53, 57, 59) in spaced relationship with the receiving means (13, 29, 49, 63) at a level above the shelf and with the shelf extending substantially laterally.
