The intention relates to a method and system for determining if a spherical element strikes a component forming part a playing field, or on or close to same. The method comprises: a) acquiring images of a monitored area of the playing field, covering at least part of the component, such as a side line (L) delimiting a playing area (Z1-Z10) or a target (A1-A8); b) performing an approximate detection of an impact of a spherical element in relation to the component or close to same, using an object-detection and -recognition system that can determine when the detected object is really a spherical element; c) automatically selecting one of the images acquired for the same point in time, including the area where the impact occurred; and d) analysing the selected image in order to verify whether or not the spherical element struck the component. The system has been adapted to carry out the method of the invention.
