Catalyst comprising at least one element of group VIB, at least one element of group VIII, phosphorus pentoxide having phosphorus content of 0.1-9 wt.%, vanadium pentoxide with vanadium content of 0.25-7 wt.%, and at least one porous refractory oxide support, is new. The catalyst has a total pore volume of = 0.3 ml/g, a macropore volume of, defined as the volume of pores of diameter of greater than 50 nm, = 40 vol.%, mesopores median diameter (pores of diameter of 3.6-50 nm) of 5-36 nm and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of at least 120 m 2/g. Independent claims are included for: (1) hydrotreating heavy hydrocarbon feedstocks including atmospheric residues, vacuum residues from direct distillation, deasphalted oils, and/or residues from conversions process such as coking and hydroconversion in fixed-, ebullated- or moving-bed, using catalyst; and (2) a process for hydrotreating residue in a fixed bed comprising at least (a) a hydrodesulfurization step and (b) a hydrodemetallization step, where the steps (a) and (b) are performed using catalyst.
