Preparing tin compounds (Q), comprises reacting elemental tin with a compound comprising hydroxyl groups in the presence of an oxygen-comprising additive having a dielectric constant of = 5 at a temperature of 20-30[deg] C. The additive is different from the compound comprising hydroxyl groups. The additive is excluded from aliphatic alcohols, cycloaliphatic alcohols, aromatic alcohols and water. An independent claim is included for tin(IV) compounds of formula (Sn[BuN(CHR1CHR2O)]2) (I) and (II) obtained by the above process. Bu : optionally branched butyl, preferably n-butyl; R1-R4 : H or alkyl, preferably methyl; and Hal : halo, preferably Cl. [Image].
