The invention relates to a method for 3D sound field reproduction. The method comprises steps of calculating positioning filters (7) using virtual source description data (8) and loudspeaker description data (9) according to a sound field reproduction technique derived from a surface integral, applying positioning filter coefficients (7) to filter the first audio input signal (1) to form second audio input signals (10). Therefore, loudspeakers (2) are positioned so as to realize a sampling of the loudspeaker surface (3) into second loudspeaker surfaces (11) for which the loudspeaker spacing is substantially smaller for loudspeakers (2) located in the horizontal plane (15) than for elevated loudspeakers. Then, loudspeaker weighting data (12) are defined from the ratio between the area covered by second loudspeaker surfaces (11) and the total area of the loudspeaker surface (3). The second audio input signals (3) are modified according to the loudspeaker weighting data (12) in order to form third audio input signals (13). Finally, third audio input signals (13) are fed into the loudspeakers (2), synthesizing a sound field (4).
