PURPOSE: A method of contention-based transmission in a multi-user wireless communication system is provided for contention-based mode based on the carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism, which enables terminals to transmit data to a coordinator in an active period that is adaptively divided according to transmission performance. CONSTITUTION: A coordinator divides an active period into a plurality of sub active periods according to transmission performance. The coordinator performs the division of active period to satisfy transmission performance while minimizing power consumption. The coordinates informs terminal equipment of a result of the division. The terminal equipment determines a sub active period that the terminal equipment will use among the divided sub active periods (403). The terminal device communicates with the coordinate using a contention-based transmission technique only in the determined sub active period.
