The present invention relates to a method and a system for discovering nearby friends using an access point (AP) to notify whether portable terminals of friends exist around a portable terminal to a user. Provided is a method for discovering nearby friends using multiple APs in a portable terminal, wherein the multiple APs allocate wireless resources to the portable terminal when the portable terminal uses a wireless LAN service. The method comprises the steps of: receiving, by the portable terminal, radio waves and AP information from the APs; processing the AP information into an AP list; transmitting the AP list to a server; receiving the AP list, searching for nearby friends using the AP list and a built-in friend relationship DB, and creating and transmitting a nearby friend list to the portable terminal by the server; and receiving the nearby friend list and displaying the same by the portable terminal.
