The present invention relates to a draw solute to be applied to a method for desalination and water purification using forward osmosis, and to a method for desalination and water purification using the draw solute. More particularly, the present invention relates to a thermo-responsive forward osmosis draw solute which has a molar mass of 50 to 3000 g/mol and a phase separation phenomenon occurring at temperatures from 0 to 70°C, and to a method for desalination and water purification using the draw solute. According to the present invention, a thermo-responsive forward osmosis draw solute having optimum conditions for sea water desalination and purification of contaminated water using forward osmosis can be provided. The method for desalination and water purification using the thermo-responsive forward osmosis draw solute consumes an extremely small amount of energy, is easy to apply, and enables very easy separation of the draw solute.
