The present invention relates to a method for determining the fitness and unfitness of a banknote, which includes the steps of: obtaining a banknote image including at least one among a visible reflection image, an infrared reflection image, and an infrared transmission image for a banknote surface; calculating a feature value from the banknote image; and determining the contamination degree of the banknote based on the feature value. According to the present invention, the contamination degree of the banknote is accurately and efficiently determined by calculating the feature value from the visible image and the infrared image for the banknote surface and statistically combining a plurality of feature values.
