HE-3 NEUTRON PROPORTIONAL COUNTER WITH INTERNAL LEAKAGE DETECTION AND RELATED METHOD

The radiation detector 10 includes a pressure-tight housing 12 having a cylindrical outer peripheral wall and both end seals. The electrode wire 20 extends from the cylindrical wall and passes through the center of the housing. The pressurized detector gas fills the housing and the circuit connections 40 and 42 are connected to the electrode wire 20 and the housing 12 so that the potential is applied. The electrode wire is comprised of a material that ionizes the gas in the housing to provide a source of alpha particles for generating an alpha peak 46 on the output spectrum that is different from the peak generated by the incident neutron. A related method is also disclosed.
