Disclosed is a device for removing fog in a single image using alpha matte estimation and image synthesis. The device for removing fog comprises: a transmission map generation unit for setting n (wherein, n is two or more positive integers) weighting values for the inputted single image and estimating a transmission displaying the fog contamination degree to generate transmission maps as many as n; a restoration image generation unit for generating restoration images as many as n using a certain method based on the generated n transmission maps; an alpha matte generation unit for generating alpha mattes as many as n to determine an area to be synthesized based on an area having the maximum contrast from the restored image; and a result image synthesis unit for synthesizing n alpha mattes to generate a single result image. According to the present invention, the device for removing fog is able to remove the fog fast by quickly approximating the transmission to be estimated rather than by estimating the exact transmission, and to obtain a natural image through the image synthesis based on the estimated value.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2014
