Methods and apparatus for casting silicon for photovoltaic and other applications are provided. In the case of such methods and apparatuses, it is also possible to form a cast body of geometrically aligned polycrystalline silicon with at least two dimensions of at least about 10 cm each with no or substantially no radially distributed impurities and defects.
