A digital photographing apparatus for deriving a smile face of a subject and a control method thereof are provided to generate a signal of notifying a smile face when a face of the subject is not smiled, thereby deriving a natural smile face of the subject. A face recognizer(196) recognizes a face of a subject. A smile face decider(197) determines whether the recognized face of the subject is smiled. When the recognized face of the subject is not smiled, a controller(198) generates a user notifying signal. When the subject is plural, the face recognizer recognizes each face. The smile face decider determines whether all recognized faces are smiled.
