An embodiment of the present invention relates to a decoding device having high error correction efficiency in decoding a Bose-Chaudhri-Hocquenthem (BCH) code and having a simple structure, and a method performed by the device. The decoding device for decoding a BCH code comprises: a syndrome calculating block calculating syndromes for determining whether an input BCH code has an error; a determinant calculating block calculating a determinant by using the syndrome values and determining an error position of the BCH code; and an error correcting block finally correcting an error through the determined error position information, wherein the determinant calculating block comprises a common factor calculating block allowing variables required for obtaining a determinant to be shared by syndromes and a determinant decision block determining whether there is an error by a bit value according to an error check position of the input BCH code.
