The method involves mounting the test power transformer (1) at the testing site or subsequent connection to the mains (4) at a substation (2), connecting leads of the primary coil (5) of the transformer with a tap switch (6) to a high-voltage mains (4), short-circuiting leads of the secondary coil (8) of the transformer (1) using a switching device (9) at the necessary moments in time, measuring the required parameters, disconnecting the primary coil (5) from the mains (4), opening the secondary coil (8) and then repeating the testing process the required number of times. Before connecting the leads of the primary coil (5) to the mains (4), mains voltage is raised to a maximum operating value and the tap switch (6) is switched to a "minimum" position with the primary coil (5) connected to the mains (4).
