The method of identifying a precoding matrix corresponding to a wireless network channel comprises steps of: identifying a capacity metric which includes an identity matrix; approximating the capacity metric using an approximation metric which ignores the identity matrix; using the approximation metric to search over all matrices in a matrix codebook, wherein the matrix codebook is stored in a storage device, in order to identify a particular precoding matrix which increases capacity of the wireless network channel, wherein said particular precoding matrix has a corresponding matrix index; and transmitting said matrix index across said the wireless network channel.;EFFECT: high link efficiency.;10 cl, 9 dwg
