The method involves calculating a distance covered at the time of each step taken by the foot of a person, by double integration of data measured by a sensor module (29) of a wrist pedometer (2), where the initial condition for the start of each integration period for each step is a zero speed of the hand relative to the ground. The initial condition of zero speed of the hand relative to the ground is modeled as corresponding to a moment when cancellation of a value of acceleration is detected by an accelerometer (26) of the sensor module. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for calculating a distance covered on foot using a portable wrist pedometer (2) a portable wrist pedometer.
