The method involves closing an air gap (6) of magnetic circuits (4a, 4b) of a sensor device (1) partially with a sheeting. Magnetic resistance of the circuits is changed by utilizing the correct sheeting. The changing of magnetic resistance is sensed by a magnetic field sensor (3) i.e. Hall sensor, and transmitted to an evaluation unit (5). A position of an object i.e. vehicle seat rail, is detected through changing of magnetic resistance of an air gap (7). An interruption is evaluated by the evaluation unit if a magnetic field sensor signal (Ih) is zero or smaller than a threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for testing sheeting of a sensor device.
