The device (3) has a covering film (5) automatically reducing entry of electromagnetic radiation into an active region of a photovoltaic module (2) at 25% if necessary. The active region is provided for retaining electromagnetic radiation energy. The covering film is reversed to increase the reduced entry of the electromagnetic radiation into the active region of the photovoltaic module if necessary. The covering film is rolled and partly unrolled for covering the photovoltaic module. A pivot shaft (4) of the film is fixedly mounted relative to the photovoltaic module. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a protection device.
