The system has a set of application units (34, 36) for applying a coating material i.e. paint, and a set of handling units (26, 28) for supporting the application units. An optical sensor device (42) is optically worked to detect a contamination by overspray on a portion of the application units and/or the handling units. The sensor device comprises multiple measuring fields (50, 50a, 50d) at the application units and/or the handling units, where the measuring fields co-acts with a measurement unit (52) that is formed as an external unit related to the handling units. The sensor device comprises a transmissivity sensor, a reflectance sensor, a layer thickness test device and a conductivity sensor. An independent claim is also included for a coating plant.
