The windlass has a hand-operated spindle band brake (102) acting on a chain sprocket (103) of the windlass. The brake is adjusted with a spindle (1) for resolving and braking over a handwheel (2). The spindle bears a firm rope drum (6) with an adjustable rope (5), which is connected to a weight (4) at a free end, where the weight is arranged in a vertical guide (11). The weight in a released position of the brake is adjusted into a raised position of the brake over the rope drum with the spindle. The weight in a braked position is automatically adjusted into a lower position over the rope.
