The system (10) has a first electric machine (25) which is mechanically connected to a driven mechanical component (26) for transmitting mechanical energy. A switch (50) is operated in a power supply mode in which an alternating voltage side (36) of an AC-DC converter (30) is connected with a vehicle-mounted power supply component (41). The AC-DC converter is operated with electrical energy from the first electric machine generated by conversion of mechanical energy from the driven mechanical component in driving mode. An independent claim is included for a method for operating propulsion system.
